Chancellor's Statement

Toward the Promotion of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Ritsumeikan

Ritsumeikan was founded on the spirit of “Freedom and Innovation,” and after the war, “Peace and Democracy” was defined as the educational philosophy of Ritsumeikan University. The spirit of institutional development that encourages thinking and action that transcend existing frameworks and boundaries through respect for a diverse array of values as well as dialogue and collaboration with others is also clearly stated in the Ritsumeikan Charter.
At Ritsumeikan, by engaging in organizational development in which every member of the Academy can feel comfortable to learn, pursue research, and work, we will promote diversity, equity and inclusion through the following initiatives to ensure that every member of the Academy can feel pride and joy for Ritsumeikan.

  1. 1 Ritsumeikan shall establish an Academy where its members, who have diverse backgrounds and circumstances in terms of nationality, ethnicity, religion, ideology, social attributes, disabilities, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and age, respect each other and can learn, pursue research, and work together.
  2. 2 Ritsumeikan will raise the awareness of its members about the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and it will cultivate individuals who can respect the rights of others.
  3. 3 Ritsumeikan will strive to create conditions for education, research, and employment by which its members can fully demonstrate their individuality and abilities.
  4. 4 Ritsumeikan will establish fair support systems, including reasonable accommodation, to enable its members to make full use of their abilities.
  5. 5 Ritsumeikan, with an eye toward achieving a society where diversity, equity, and inclusion are the norm, will actively contribute to the realization of a livable society for everyone by seeking solutions to myriad social issues.

Yoshio Nakatani, Chancellor of the Ritsumeikan Trust

Note: Ritsumeikan confirmed its commitment to continuing to promote these initiatives by adopting the unified use of the term “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I)” on an Academy-wide basis from AY2026. In line with this, the Chancellor's Statement has been partially revised.
