Basic Vision and Basic Policy
on the Promotion of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Basic Vision

Based on its founding spirit of “Freedom and Innovation,” the organizational culture cultivated by Ritsumeikan is imbued with the spirit of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I)—respect for your own and others’ diversity and learning from new perspectives. This spirit is clearly articulated in the Ritsumeikan Charter and, through the practices of education and research, it has given rise to a culture that supports the free pursuit of unprecedented and uncharted endeavors, that is, “paving the way to the future.”

When the diverse individuals who make up society encounter one another and genuinely engage with each other's diversity, they spark change and innovation, and it is this process that leads to the creation of value that opens up the future. Equity means recognizing diversity not through a single indicator or standard, but through a broad range of perspectives and ensuring that each person has access to an environment that validates them.

By recognizing human weaknesses, failures, and mistakes and by supporting and uplifting one another, we can create spaces in which everyone feels safe to express their authentic selves. In this way, inclusion, or the embracing of both one’s own and others’ diversity, is realized.

Ritsumeikan aspires to a society in which Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) are the norm not only within the Academy but beyond it, and in which all people are respected and able to live with a sense of well-being. By sharing its commitment to DE&I widely with society, Ritsumeikan will promote initiatives that enable those who graduate from the Academy to become active agents in shaping the future, drawing on diverse perspectives and knowledge.

Basic Policy

  1. 1 We will eliminate social barriers and create an environment where anyone can feel comfortable to learn, pursue research, and work.
  2. 2 When making or implementing decisions and policies, we will ensure diversity among participants and respect the diversity of their perspectives and intentions.
  3. 3 We will work to further enrich diversity within the Academy and create opportunities to promote understanding of DE&I.
  4. 4 We will share the Academy’s initiatives to promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) widely with society and contribute to building a livable society for everyone.
